Greens
launch campaign to stop new Tesco plans
11th Nov 2008
Broxtowe Green Party members have launched a campaign to try and
stop revised plans for the proposed Tesco superstore on Station Road, Beeston.
The 'Say No To Tesco' campaign will try and persuade local residents and shopkeepers
to protest at plans for over 9,000 square feet of supermarket - nearly twice
the original proposals. The revised plans are being reviewed by the local
council and will be debated by a planning committee in early December.
The campaign has launched a blog. See: http://saynototesco.wordpress.com/
Local
ethical supermarket saved with help from Greens
24th June 2008
Campaigners who were trying to Save Out of This World from a proposed
planning 'change of use' were celebrating last night as the Council's Development
committee voted out the plans. Green activists and the shop's staff helped
lead dozens of concerned local residents into the council to hear the debate.
After a long discussion and a speech from the shop's manager, the committee
rejected the plans on the grounds of the need to keep 'vitality' in the local
shopping area.
What was especially pleasing was that councillors were using the arguments that Greens had been putting forward during the campaign. This should be rejected because the shop is the only major source of fair trade food and locally-produce in the area. And if we are serious about tackling climate change and developing a sustainable community then we must support those people who are willing to run businesses that help those goals.
Further details
and news of any new developments can be found on the campaign
blog which was set-up by Green Party members.
